 This photography campaign was designed to bring attention to the issues of racism, prejudice and overall ignorance that has been impressed upon Black Americans. This is no longer just a statement…it has become a MOVEMENT to get others to understand that the world would be such a better place if we could just ERASE THE HATE!! Nudity was implemented to demonstrate the RAW REALITY of these issues…so if it causes you to become uncomfortable while viewing this…GOOD…maybe it will challenge you and others to take a stand against these injustices.     • YEA I AM FROM WHITE SATANIC OHIO AND MY FATHER WAS MURDERED AND I WAS ALMOST KILLED BUT THEY CHOSE TO IMPRISON ME ON LIES FOR TWELVE YEARS IN HOPES THAT MY LIFE WAS OVER AS A EXCITING BLACK MAN.   3. Hi James, I like the idea you are trying to convey here, and I think the pictures are definitely very visceral. One thing I was thinking was whether these nude photos unintentionally perpetrate certain other stereotypes as they try to make a statement. I think there may be a certain stereotype around blacks as being “hyper-sexualized” for both male and female (not only being promiscuous, but showing off body parts, etc). While this is already done a lot in the media, I think this stereotype may be particularly attached to blacks as well. Many critical theorists talks about this, and if you run a search on “critical race theory” and “hypersexualization”, you might find some interesting stuff.

    • Hi Miguel…You raise a very good point! I can personally see how one might question the hyper-sexualization of Black Americans. On the flip side…their raw sexuality is what captured your attention from the first glance. As we all know with anything…Sex or the sexualization of anything makes it more marketable. Therefore it’s a catch 22 that works in making others take notice of the NAKED reality of these various messages. This may go over the heads of a few…but the majority have already recognized that the NAKED TRUTH is more important than the NAKED BODIES.

  6. I love this project. It reminds me of Greenfield-Sander’s The Black List Project, yet takes a new direction for several reasons. One : I’m making an assumption here, that it was created by a Black Photographer.Although I don’t have a problem with Greenfield-Sander’s ownership I think this creates a strong message. Two: Societal concerns are clear and are the intended focus, whereas Greenfield-Sander’s only wanted to focus on the image. Three: Using unidentifiable faces allows us in combination with the text makes it more personal. I can see images and thought of myself in this project.

    You posses wonderful technique and skill at taking photos, plus Art that motivates and inspires action is incredible. I just want to see more photos.

    I have a few questions. I understand why these models are covering personal places on their bodies for advertising reasons. Did you photo any models without the protective covering element? I find that I’m aroused by the unknown of their bodies. I wonder if they were fully exposed figures if I would not feel this sensuality as much. Also What kind of camera did you use and how do you plan on printing these.

    Can’t wait to get to an exhibit. And if you are touring the exhibit soon, will you be traveling with it?

    • Hi Elyas,

      First I would like to thank you for the positive feedback and secondly to answer your question…I AM BLACK! Now…let’s move on to your questions:

      1. Yes I photographed all the models at some point in their personal sessions completely naked, however I don’t wish to turn my project into something that is over-sexualized. At that point you lose the impact of the message. Nudity has been used to both represent the raw nature of each message and as a tool to attract the interest of the viewer without completely taking the focus off of the message. For in the end…the message is the main focus not the naked bodies.

      2. I don’t wish to discuss my camera or equipment. My techniques and tools of my trade are the not the focus of this project, so I wish to leave them completely out of it respectively. Thanks.

      3. As of now, I don’t have plans to travel with this exhibit, but I don’t know what he future holds and I am open to that option should it present itself down the road. Thanks again for all the great feedback and stay tuned for updates!

  13. Would you be open to including other cultures which are also experiencing stereotypes. Muslims, Latinos…. As a black Latin American I felt very touched and saw myself in every image. This is a panafrican issue.

  17. Wow how innovative! So impressive I love this campaign! I love the message it sends. I’m wondering if you will be doing more on this project and if you will, will you be addressing other issues with this style? It’s eye catching and so dramatic. Respect! Maybe you can do one that points out that us bi racial people are not red bone high yellow or mulatto that we are black people too! just a suggestion! love your work keep doing what you do and I will spread it anyway I can!!!!!!

    • Currently no plans to be in Harlem anytime soon, however that could quickly change if the invitation was extended along with all necessary expenses.   21. I love this campaign. However, I’m a little disappointed that all of the models are slim/muscular. Sizeism is very real in our community and most of us don’t fit eurocentric ideals of beauty.

  22. There are so many things I love about these photos. This is truly a powerful message. The most powerful to me is that it says Black not African American. I am very proud of my African heritage and would not change it if could, but I am a Black women. If it was up to me I would only be called an American but that will never happen. So I wear Black proudly and honor my African heritage as much as I can.

  23. I saw this on Tumblr. Great campaign! I love what this campaign is doing. I’m a fourth African American, but since I don’t have the darkest skin tone people usually make fun of me. Maybe it is just because I am still in high school. I just want to say, that this is really inspiring and touching project.

  25. This is creativity at its finest….. As I have always said “Black is Beautiful”….. But you can’t completely write off that “hypersexualization” part from a black person, because even without d “nudity” part,a black person still carries a kinda sexual feel,let alone now being naked……. Well that goes to say that your message would most definitely spread around the world,,, because truthfully,that was what first caught my attention,and I am in Nigeria,far away in Africa, and I have heard it….. My hope and prayer is that this project causes d change that it intends,,, because this growing generation is no longer moved by what it hears,sees and reads anymore…. I also like the fact that you are showing blacks just the way they were forced out of our shores here in Africa,away to a foreign land…….”Bare and Nude”…”Bound by chains in captivity” just the way the words and inscriptions are bound on the body of the blacks you portray…….   27. We see your trying to raise $10,000 dollars. What EXACTLY are you going to do with the funds you acquire from this campaign? Your idea and concept are great, but we’ve experienced many photographic campaigns like this before…What begins as a social plight to benefit MANY becomes an “apparent” social plight to pay the personal bills of the photographer.

  29. Just a tiny comment that there’s a grammatical mistake in the title for the video “don’t judge a book by it’s cover”. It’s = a contraction for “it is”. You want “its cover”. Otherwise: beautiful.

  31. All models(or those pictured in your ad) are in shape. Why? Where is the BBW? Where is the stocky man? Moreover, both men and women(all of them in this ad) are covering their breasts and genitals. Why? If you set out to make a statement. Make it POWERFUL!!!

    • Patrick…for starters I have shot over 100 models of all sizes, ages and complexions. However you have only seen a small sample of the entire project, therefore before you base your entire synopsis on what is displayed…try inquiring of more information. Finally, the project was designed to bring awareness to an important cause, not get your perverted rocks off. So please understand that you will NEVER see any exposure of genitalia displayed…The messages alone are POWERFUL enough!
